Carrifran I
Spent the afternoon helping to plant trees at the far end of the Carrifran Wildwood. The weather was perfect: any sunnier and warmer and it would have been unpleasant to work. The aim for the weekend was to plant 1000 "trees" around the Firthhope Burn at about 650m, to add to the 600,000 that had been planted in the glen below us. The "trees" were mostly downy willow and only about 10cm tall. With a bit of luck, in 20 years time there will be willows lining the Firthhope Burn! And the lower part of the glen could be a wonderful orienteering area by then, too!
To get an early start on the Sunday, we camped at the site so had the chance to walk up White Coomb at sunset.
This incredible project, started 15 years ago, aims to "re-wild" a very pretty glen in the Borders by eliminating sheep and then planting local species of tree appropriate to altitude.
