In 1793 Greengrocers knew how to diversify!

They sold hops, cheese, pickles and sauces too. But apparently they were also “Seedsmen” and sold sperm!
 
This is my favourite shop in Penrith – again.
 
After extensive research I discover it should be read as  “Wax, sperm, composite and Kensington candles”. The sperm candles were made from the oil from sperm whales.
