Danesfield with Volkswagen

Today's destination was Marlow in Buckinghamshire for a Volkswagen driving day. It was located at Danesfield House, a very posh and slightly eccentric hotel on the road between Marlow and Henley.

The building is starkly white, perched above the Thames, and has very ornate internal furnishings, including lots of dark wood panelling and extremely intricate patterned plaster ceilings.

Danesfield takes its name from Danish adventurers who made encampment there in ancient times. During the Second World War it was occupied by the RAF as a base for the Intelligence Section. The clock tower was used as officers' quarters.

Later it was sold by the Ministry of Defence to Carnation Foods, and used as the company headquarters. It became a hotel in 1991, and is a very popular wedding venue.
