IMPACT UK on the roof of the world #Nepal
IMPACT UK’s Chairman, David Walker, is undertaking a personal challenge to raise vital funds for our worldwide programme.
‘IMPACT, of which I have been the Chairman for 12 years, celebrates its 30th birthday this year. In that time it has achieved incredible things at minimal cost in a dozen countries in South and South East Asia and East Africa. For example, over 20 million medical examinations and interventions; countless prevention of disability programs; operations for cataracts, cleft palate, orthopaedic and ear problems plus the creation of the famous hospital train - the Lifeline Express in India and the Jibon Tari floating hospital in Bangladesh. 92p of every pound we raise goes into the programs.
So, there's something to celebrate and I've decided my celebration will be to go back to Nepal, a country I've got to know well over the past 35 years, where we have large and successful IMPACT programs. I will be visiting the Langtang valley, the so called Shangri-la of the Himalayas in the first two weeks of April. My friend and I plan to make our way up the valley from the start at 1500 meters to the Kyanjin Gompa (monastery) at 3800 metres. From there we will push on to the base of Pemthang Karpo Ri (6565 metres). We will not attempt that but, if the conditions are right, will try the nearby Tsergo-ri (4984 metres), a mere Himalayan pimple but still higher than Mt. Blanc. When we get back to Kathmandu, I shall be meeting with Prof. Rakesh Prasad who heads Nepal IMPACT and directs its many impressive programs.’
