That's mine!
I'm a man of routine (bad I know) and first task every morning excepting only the Feast of the Nativity is to walk to the paper shop and get my Daily Telegraph which I start reading over breakfast. Like my late mother it's business news first although I don't actually have any money to speak of. This morning I went in the shop and no papers except the local rags. So it was a newspaperless coffee and toast. Went to Tesco just before 10:00 and still no paper. Switching on the computer what do I come across but my paper lying in the middle of the A9.
The accident, two lorries head-on, seemingly happened in the early hours but for all practical purposes the A9 is the only road for traffic from the south. So even if my paper wasn't on this particular lorry it would have to wait for the road to be cleared. Some shops like M&S have only limited storage facilities and rely very much on a daily re-stocking along this route. There is a lot of pressure to make the whole length of the road from Perth to Inverness, about 110 miles, dual carriage way but at present many sections are single carriageway. It is regarded as one of the North's most dangerous roads. Impatience is a factor especially when long queues build up behind a slow-moving vehicle. And in Winter heavy snow at the high passes of Drumochter and Slochd can also close the road. And whatever the inconvenience to other drivers on the road or to others affected Mrs P reminded me at lunchtime that for those directly involved and their families there is a human tragedy.
