The Rose & Crown, Trent (Saturday 11th April 2015)
Max and Monty began a series of Saturday visits to their pubs, fresh from their successes at the SHS Show at Grantham in March. Max had won 1st place in the single horse trade turnout and was overall champion turnout, and Max and Monty had won the Best Brewery Pair award. I went to the first Saturday visit as I hadn't seen them since last year, and found them outside the Rose and Crown near Sherborne in Dorset looking as wonderful as ever and wowing the crowds.
I'd had an enjoyable drive across the Somerset countryside, going through Frome, Bruton, Bedington and Castle Cary, and earlier on in Trowbridge I had found myself behind a trap being pulled by two beautiful black ponies. The pub was hosting a country fête, so there were also goats, calves, lambs and plastic ducks to look at. A falconry display was to take place in the afternoon, giving me time to go into Sherborne to do some shopping, get a Waitrose coffee and have a wander round.
The falconry event was not a static display as I had expected but involved aerial feats by a Harris hawk (Archie), an African fish eagle (Shona) and a superfast peregrine falcon whose name was not given, but who shot through the crowds at deadly accuracy and narrowly missed my ear at one point, being rewarded by grabbing a pierce of meat from the thrown lure at the end of the display.
I drove back by a different route that included some pretty Wiltshire villages, including Bratton, Steeple Ashton and Great Hinton.
