La Lune

English language doesn't use gender as a way of defining objects in the way the french and spanish languages do.

To our friends across the channel she is considered female and the sun male. Interestingly, the earth is female too.

It would be fascinating to know at what point this was decided and why. 
There must have been some understanding of the universe before that was decided. 

Does anyone out there know?
