Albert Square
An exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery. This image is by Emily Allchurch, and is a collage of hundreds of digital images she took, recreating and updating Adolphe Valette's 1910 painting of Albert Square. Both are hung in the atrium area.
Upstairs there is an exhibition of her collages of Tokyo, recreating the mid 19th century wood block prints of HiroshIge. Very effective. Hiroshige's prints are of the city of Edo. It was a feudal city when he died in 1858, with the fall of the Shoguns in 1868 it became Tokyo as Japan responded to the threat and opportunity represented by the European powers and a rising USA.
I took my own photo of Albert Square from a similar vantage point. It will not be hung in an Art Gallery any time soon.
