Grease is the word, is the word, is the word......
Today I was asked to go along and photograph Elizabeth's 10th Birthday party. The theme was 'Grease'...... There were 'Pink Ladies' galore. Coke floats, milkshakes, burgers and hotdogs even party bags full of American sweets. I got to bring one home for my son.......I had to steal the 'Butterfinger', not sure yet if the Hershey's chocolate is entirely safe.
I went to school with Elizabeth's Mum Hazel so we are the same 'era'. I remember my elder sister Penny smuggling me into the Roxy Cinema to watch 'Grease' when it first hit our shores. I was told to 'stand on tip-toes' when we paid to get in as was a little too young. It's a film that's always stayed with me though as a huge influence. I hired the video when my sister was going through a tough time as a surprise, we watched it through at her house and I remember her at the end of the film saying 'Shall I put it on again?'
The two girls in the photograph are great friends. Birthday girl Elizabeth (on the right) and Isabel who's somewhat shyer and fittingly was dressed as the shyer version of Sandy.
I spent a lot of the party trying to get a photograph of Isabel, she spent most of the party trying to avoid the camera before coming up to me halfway through and to my surprise saying.,'If you really want to take my photograph, then I'll have it taken outside with Elizabeth now'
Elizabeth insisted Isabel should sit with her hands on her knees and took up the more confident pose herself....... very fitting :-)
We start believin' now that we can be who we are.............
