Caesar tries Britain for his summer break
This is a detail from one my favourite pieces in the V&A (so much so that I actually know where it is and try and see it every week). It is Caesar Invading Britain by John Deare dated 1796. This detail shows the Romans.
I love the three dimensional figures that are half submerged back into the stone. The fear on the faces of the Roman soldiers as they are beaten back by the Britons. For all their armour and technology, the Romans cannot hope to win. Wonderfully, the piece was commissioned by John Penn and big supporter of the American Revolution.
