The Essex Marshes

The place I was brought up is on the Essex Marshes. In fact it is the backwater that Arthur Ransome wrote about in his book "Secret Water" in the Swallows and Amazons series.
You couldn't help but learn to sail here. I don't recall any formal lessons though I think my Mum took me out in a boat once or twice to give me the basics. Once I could swim I was allowed to go off in a dinghy on my own.
