Edinburgh old and new, seen from Calton Hill
Calton Hill is in the centre of Edinburgh, and thus provides several excellent viewpoints of the city centre. For more spectacular scenery, and a much higher viewpoint, you can climb Arthur's Seat.
This view looks south-westwards from the hill.
On the horizon are: to the left, the Pentland Hills, great walking country for the energetic, and easily accessible using Edinburgh's bus system; to the right, on the north side of the (here invisible) Firth of Forth, is the erstwhile Kingdom of Fife.
Two thirds of the city shown here are the old town, with the castle at its highest point. To the right is the New Town, with the blackened, rocket-shaped Scott Monument dominating Prince's Street.
