Sir Harry Gough's House 1771

All the times we’ve driven through Steyning we have never stopped until this afternoon. What a surprise, such a picturesque little village. This area was really lovely and every property in great condition. The plaque on this cottage says Sir Harry Gough, 1771 . It seems he was a member of parliament for nearby Bramber and back in the day he owned the whole of Bramber village. Why he is commemorated here in Steyning I couldn’t find out.

Late news. Found out another bit once home - Sir Harry let out this house but his tenant unaccountably thought if he didn't pay rent,  the house would eventually become his. Harry was having none of that and put his name on the wall, so everyone was sure who owned it. It's still there. So not so much commemorated as laying claim.
