Menai suspension bridge
I was in Bangor for meetings today and we got to go on a guided walk.
An impressive feature this bridge straddles the Menai Straits in North Wales. Built by Thomas Telford and completed in 1836 this was at the time the biggest suspension bridge in the world. Sixteen huge chains held up 579 feet of deck, allowing 100 feet of clear space beneath. This allowed tall sailing ships navigating the seaway to pass underneath, whilst spanning the Straits at its narrowest point.
It was modernised and strengthened to its present state in the late 1930s.
