Can writing be taught?

Are writing classes a waste of time?
 
A member of the audience asked Doris Lessing this question a few years ago at the Hay Book Festival.
 
Doris Lessing gave a curt answer: “If they weren’t writing what else would they be doing? Watching soaps on telly?”
 
Whether their work gets published is irrelevant she said, more important was that the person was writing, doing something she enjoyed.
 
Anyway, with the changing landscape of publishing today creative writing classes are the only way aspiring writers are likely to get any feedback on their work. The days of publishing houses with editors prepared to nurture them are over.
I mention all this because today I signed up for another of Laura Fyfe's  creative writing classes.
