Sally Mair - Loving life

Ephesus

Today we went to Ephesus. Too much to see and talk about. I took hundreds of photos, of ruins, plants and the area in general, the poppies in particular were beautiful, a much richer, deeper red than we are used to.
The ruins of the town centre on a main street down the hillside, which is made of strikingly beautiful white marble. There are buildings to each side which you can explore freely. They think they have uncovered only around 35% of the town, so there is much hidden under the stones and grass.
Walking in the steps of so many people, the Virgin Mary, St John, St Paul, the Roman Caesers, Cleopatra's half sister Arsinoe is thought to be buried here too. It is hard to choose one image, so, from a huge selection, this is a view of the main amphitheatre looking back as we are about to leave. Building of the theatre took place from before 100BC and took over 60 years. It held over 25,000 people and St Paul preached here - such a sense of history in the whole site, a real 'wow' place.
One of my favourite places. If you haven't been and get the chance, do go.
