Planting a maypole (also called Macdonald or may) is a very old use that still exists in large parts of Europe. Also in Limburg comes this old use in many villages even before. It is a fertility rite to at the beginning of the summer to celebrate nature. It is believed that the planting of the tree leads to fertility for cattle, fields and people.(google)
