Sunset at the Peace Pagoda, Jungle Beach

We spend the morning in Galle Fort partly on the beach and partly wandering the streets and going to a small museum. We head back to guest house late afternoon, shower then take a tuk tuk to Jungle Beach about 5km away. We've heard they have a Wednesday night party from sunset to sunrise so thought we'd have a look. We watch the sunset from the Japanese peace pagoda that sits above the beach and its a beautiful one. We have an excellent rice and curry dinner across the road at a small family run restaurant. There are at least six different dishes and its the best and cheapest meal we've had so far.

We head down to the party. The music is going full blast and the bar is open but there's no one around. It's early still so we grab a beer and sit on a candlelit table by the waters edge. A few more people arrive but not many so we wander to the edge of the small cove and try and get in the party spirit by drinking some of the local rum we brought with us. It seems to be filling up a bit so we head back to where everyone else is but it's not very lively. We chat to a couple of very drunk security guys who have run away from their work digs to get hammered on their last night before heading home. They are English and Welsh and one is ex army the other navy. They have been working as security on boats to try to stop piracy around the horn of Africa among other places ... scary job!

They soon head off to the bar to show off their abs to the locals and, although there are a fair few people here now, not enough and there's not much atmosphere. We give it till around 2am and decide it's not going to get any better so get a tuk tuk back to the hotel.
