Cloudage & Bee
A glorious day! Birds twittering, bees buzzing and spectacular cloudage all over the place. A spot of gardening in the morning then TJ came for lunch - eaten al fresco by the pond. We then went off in search of ringforts, leaving Himself on top of a mountain in Kilcrohane and a bracing walk home. First stop Ardahill - a ringfort perched on top of a drumlin with wonderful views in every direction. Second stop the cashel (stone ringfort) we discovered the other day, now looking very pretty with bluebells in its banks. Something had done a very large poo on top of the bank and left a trail through the grass - a fox? Third stop, tea and scones in the Creamery café, also eaten outside by the edge of a stream. Back home and a quick card meeting, Himself staggering in shortly afterwards.
I'm sure it's all election fever across the water. Here we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania, a luxury cruise ship travelling from New York to Liverpool that was torpedoed off the coast of Cork by a German U-boat in 1915. Although it was wartime no-one believed that such a prestigious passenger ship with so many civilian passengers on board would be attacked. The Captain, who survived, became the scapegoat and was accused of disobeying orders which he probably never received. All sorts of conspiracy theories abound - that Churchill knew this was going to happen and sacrificed the ship in order to make America enter the war, that the ship was carrying munitions which also exploded.... Whatever, ths shocking facts are the Lusitania went down in 17 minutes. Of the 1,959 people on board, only 761 survived and 1,198 drowned or died of their injuries. The surivivors were brought ashore to Kinsale and Cobh, where remembrance services were held today.
Much umming and aahing between photos today.
