Broad leaved marsh orchid
Drizzly and windy this morning and I didnt venture down to Kilcrohane market with my wares as I intended. Instead we did a spot of boring but necessary cleaning then read the papers and drank gunpowder tea.
We ventured out in the afternoon and walked around a little headland. Again the wildflowers were astonishing - thrift, sea campion, samphire, lousewort, wild carrot, spurge, lady's smock, scurvy grass, birdsfoot trefoil, common milkwort and a little patch of these marsh orchids (there's a little lousewort lurking in the background!) Apparently these are unique to Ireland - hope I've identified it correctly. Here's another interesting fact : the Irish name for orchid is Magairlín (pronounced moggerleen) which means testicle. This refers to the shape of the tubers - fascinating.
A wild and beautiful spot looking out across the sea - just herons, oyster catchers and curlew keeping us company. Lovely.
Hope the jubilations across the water have been fantastic and not too damp.
