The Clock, Milngavie
The clock was originally housed on an elevated fourth floor turret of the magnificent department store in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow called Copland & Lye. It was described as “one of the most extensive, architecturally elegant and the most perfectly-equipped drapery emporiums in the kingdom”. It became Arnott's for a short period before being demolished and replaced by the totally uninspiring Sauchiehall Street Centre. However, in 1981, the 3-faced clock was re-erected in Milngavie Precinct to commemorate its pedestrianisation. You can see the CL logo at the top.The plinth is a magnet for children to play chases.
An advertisement in the Glasgow Herald of 22 April, 1909 announced that Copland & Lye’s new Restaurant de Luxe offered -
