Canal Walk - 6 miles
We had another free day, as H stayed at her friend's house last night.
We drove to the canal, to just before we ended our walk last time, in Stalybridge, and set off along the bank. It was interesting to see places we know, but from a different perspective. The familiar seems so unfamiliar when viewed from the canal bank.
There were bluebells growing in the woods, and the paths were muddy because of the heavy rain in the last week. We passed a few geese along the way - this mother with her goslings, and another couple of geese sat on their nests waiting for their eggs to hatch.
Their was an very long and very dark tunnel to pass through - and we did not have torches. As we neared the end, I spotted a carving on the wall of the tunnel - '1875'. The numbers were beautifully etched into the stone. Strange to think that someone took so much trouble for something barely visible!
After 3 miles, we had reached Roaches Lock, Mossley, just before Greenfield, so we stopped off at the pub for a half, before heading back to Stalybridge.
There weren't too many people along the canal side today, a handful of walkers and a few more cyclists, two fishermen, and two barges travelling in the Greenfield direction.
Another very enjoyable walk - good times!
