A planned ruin

I visited Bicton Park this afternoon where St Mary's Church is sited.  The church was commissioned by Lady Louisa Rolle in memory of her husband and consecrated in 1850.  During the building of the church the adjacent medieval church was partially demolished to provide a 'planned ruin' setting for the Rolle family mausoleum.  I suppose keeping some of the ruins is better than demolishing all of the medieval building.  I note that the Victorian St Mary's Church is itself a Grade II listed building.  I also found that John Swete produced a watercolour of the old medieval Church in 1795.
