Too late!
While inspecting the pond at work today (hoping to see more damselflies) I noticed 3 of these shed larval skins or Exuviae, of dragonflies!
looking on-line I think the most likely suspect is the Broad-bodied chaser libellula depressa, which makes me even more sad I missed the wonderful spectacle of these magnificent insects climbing up the reeds for the last time as aquatic larvae, and hatching into the beautiful winged adults!
It was my birthday today, so a really nice birthday present, along with the Pandora beads from my lovely girlies :-) and I shall be checking the pond much more often in future in case I miss any more dragonfly activity!
