A big road for a small critter!

I was riding along this cyclepath this morning when I spotted this splendid looking caterpillar so having the camera with me I stopped to take a few photos. It would walk along the centre for a while then veer off to the right, but the road was that way and there was too much traffic for it to be likely to survive. I kept encouraging it to go left instead to the wider verge and fields beyond but it wasn't having it, so in the end I picked it up and placed it there. When I left it was all curled up and I hope it stayed away from the road, I definitely couldn't stand and watch it head for the traffic!
