nonsenses & truths

Cthulhu

I'm 38 years old and I had never read any H P Lovecraft until about a week ago when I bought this book (complete with a pair of red/green 3D specs to stop the cover making one's eyes do funny things. I assume they are not required to read the text). I'm a few stories in, and part way through the 'title track'. It's fantastic.

My dad writes ghost stories, I happen to think they are rather good but I'm unlikely to present an unbiased opinion. He's heavily influenced by M R James, but I don't think I've ever seen any Lovecraft in my parents' extensive bookshelves. Now I've a had a taste of it I am reminded very much of my dad's tales. We get one every Christmas Eve.

It's all a very welcome escape from certain 'eccentric' academics. Was chatting to someone today who heard who the two profs are who are directors of the centre that I work in, and he said I have the worst pair! Today I had to sit and be told things that I either already knew, or know to be bollocks. Nod and smile.
