Stadium at Ephesus
This was used till recentley. Eg Pavarotti and Elton John, but part of the terrace seating slumped.so it has not been used for concerts in the last ten years.
Sat 23,000 in its day which implies the population od this early Roman city was about x10. Or 230,000.
I only went a fraction of the way up.
Acoustics still great. Watched a young couple doing a selfie movie while singing. It sounded terrific. Our guide got us to do "Its now or never..." Not sure we were so tuneful but it did echo or reverberate round
The street at rear right leading to back was the Harbour st. Went to a canal extension of harbour. Now sea is 8 km away due to silting over hundreds of years. One reason for the down fall of this huge city was the silting , the other is they had several big earthquakes that did much damage.
The old Ephesus and modern Selcuk were very tolerant and it was an safe place for the early Christians
Also saw "Mary' s House". A small chapel where it is believed she spent much of her life after Jesus was crucified.
Amazing history here.
