Tunnels
I'm not sure about war tourism, but seeing the tunnels at Cu Chi is a must so off I went.
An early start, up at 6 and a not cheap hotel breakfast. It was a tour of 1, me and Brian the tour guide. The first part was by speedboat so what with the AC in the hotel and the humidity outside the lens fogged. the trip up the river was good and took less than the predicted 2 hours. It's the end of the dry season and the river is low and the water hyacinth clogs the engine.
Getting there early meant we avoided the large tour groups so it was an easy walk round. Difficult to imagine what it must have been like living in these tunnels, some folk for years, during the day. It is a bit sanitised now and the tunnel you are encouraged to experience has been enlarged for the tourists. The VC must have been tiny. Interesting and sad but also lacking in something, emotional/soul?
Then off to the cricket farm. I made vegetable spring rolls and avoided eating the crickets. The farmer was in his 80's, ex VC and apparently said he'd still be fighting the US. Ah well, the rest of the country has now embraced capitalism.
Back for a lonely lunch is a pleasant restaurant then an afternoon poolside catching up on my lost rest, and my book.
Tonight it was back to the Opera House for the AO Show. A great hour of acrobatics, circus and comedy performed by an enthusiastic and energetic young cast. They should bring it to the Fringe.
I ate French tonight - steak, frites and creme caramel and then a cocktail back in the rooftop bar. Ah holidays!
