Christopher Isherwood
We took a conducted walking tour of the area of Berlin where Christopher Isherwood lived. This is the house in Nollendorf Strasse where he lived and wrote his diaries and "Berlin Novels" The rooming house in the show/film "Cabaret" is drawn from his time here and is where he made friends with the real-life woman who the character Sally Bowles was based on.
Brendan, the guy who guided the walk was brilliant, he described the pre-War years very evocatively - the chaos of revolving-door governments, the artistic and sexual freedoms that life in Berlin afforded people, the creativity that blossomed under the Weimar republic. All of this alongside the sinister and gradual creeping control of the Nazi's. Much food for thought.
