Nymans
I’m a bit behind this week with Blips. This was a visit to Nymans, home of Lord Snowdon’s mother Anne until her death in 1992 when she left Nymans to the National Trust.
Anne was brought up in Sussex and her grandparents Leonard and Maud Messel lived at Nymans. But on her second marriage, she moved to Ireland when she became Countess of Rosse.
A disastrous fire destroyed most of the house in 1947. She assisted her parents in partially rebuilding Nymans which can be seen on the left. When Anne was widowed, she moved back permanently to keep working on the gardens, always a passion. The ruins of the old house are still attached rather picturesquely to the new build, part can be seen here on the right. You can see the rooms Anne lived in, one of the most homely open houses I’ve seen.
