Coot Or What?

I'm guessing this is a baby Coot and might go some way to explaining the well known expression. However I know less than nothing when it comes to birds of the feathered sort (not much wiser on the other sort either) so please correct me if you know better.

I spotted this nest in one of the large ponds up in our local grave yard. The male was supplying food to the female, who then fed the young.
