Daphne, by any other name?
I'd never heard of a shrub called Daphne until my friend, Louise, mentioned it recently.
We were working on the final chapter of the book we've written together about her father, George Wyllie.
Louise's mum was called Daphne and Louise said that not long after the family moved into a new house in Gourock in the early 1960s, her dad planted a Daphne bush in the garden.
The bush, a shrub with sweet-smelling pinkish flowers, thrived in the Wyllie's beautiful eyrie-like garden overlooking the Firth of Clyde for many years.
When Daphne died in 2004, the Daphne in the garden withered and died.
I've always loved this plant at our back door. It has the sweetest smell imaginable. But I didn't know it was a Daphne bush until last night when my mother-in-law told me.
Apparently there's a few variations of Daphne out there. I sent Louise this picture and she says their one had pinker flowers.
