Cliff Face

When Ollie and I headed out for our walk this afternoon, the tide was really low and so we could scramble over the rocks to a bit of beach that is quite often out of reach. It is at the head of a bay, and has terrific rock formations.

Even if you had no interest in geology at all, a wander round the shores of Orkney would have you hooked! All the different layers, the textures, colours and wear patterns from the weather and the angles they lie at are fascinating.

Sometimes it is worrying to look up and see the overhanging bits that you would have no idea of from above!

It was another beautiful sunny day, just occasional spits of rain, but bitter in the northerly wind, especially up on the cliffs. Incredibly our rain water butts are dry - never known this before - quite a novelty, but probably due to a combination of extra garden watering due to the hot weather last week and the lack of rain. The farmers round about are well into silage cutting now, so we can expect downpours any day now! Coming home from choir this evening we saw a couple of hares chasing round a newly cut field. I love to see them, they are so secretive and so 'special ' a sight.

While we were walking back home two short eared owls silently flew up from grassy banks. Neither Ollie nor I would have seen them, so well camouflaged in the long tussocky grass.
