Paul Heaton at The Old Bridge Inn last month on his UK 50/50 pub tour. Paul is cycling between venues in the UK to celebrate his 50th birthday and the Independent British public house.

He has lost none of his Republican fire, and stops his set half-way for an extended rant about decapitating the Queen, his hatred of joggers and other miscellaneous matters that he feels the need to get off his chest.

This went down a storm in Aviemore, but plenty audible gasps and tutting in Ullapool the following night, where a large part of the audience seemed to be holiday-makers who'd spent the night shouting out for Beautiful South songs.

As well as joggers and Peter Shilton, Paul targets anyone who wears sunglasses on their head and/or shorts. I had forgotten this part of his polemic, smiled awkwardly at the woman opposite with sunglasses on her head, covered my knees and carried on snapping.
