The Blaydon Race

The original Blaydon Races were only staged once I Believe.

They became the subject of the song:

Ah went t Blaydon Races
Twas on the 9th of June
Eighteen hundred and sixty two
On a summer's afternoon.

We took the bus frae Bambras
And she was heavy laden
We went away down Collingwood Street
That's on the way t Blaydon

After measuring 2 races this morning and spending the evening certifying races I noticed the date on this one, 9th June.

The Blaydon Race in its running format is a 5.7 mile point to point race that starts quite close to where the bus set off, and finishes near the site of the original Blaydon Races.

It needs to go on to my must do list.
