Dunblane Cathedral
One of those days where it didn't know whether to rain or shine - so it did both! There was also a chill wind blowing so we went for a drive again, as it was lovely and warm in the car.
We ended up in Dunblane, which we had never visited before and were charmed by this lovely little town in Stirlingshire. A delicious lunch was enjoyed in a restaurant overlooking this magnificent cathedral, followed by a walk round the graveyard and the interior. You learn such a lot of the history of a place by reading the gravestones!
The Church of Scotland cathedral is a real mixture of timescales, with the lower part of the tower from the 11th century and the upper part the 15th century. Most of the rest of the building is Gothic from the 13th century and it underwent a huge restoration from 1889-1893. The finished building is very pleasing on the eye.
The town has many attractive old buildings and helpful information plaques on many of them to give a sense of history. However, there was no information plaque on the gold postbox (see extra photo). I wonder who it was painted for?!!!! Could it be that tennis player who was married in this very cathedral recently and who was playing in Paris as we were admiring the box?!!
We'll certainly be back for a visit, whether he's home or not:-)
