West End Flax Mill
These are the ruins of the old Flax Mill on the edge of the 'lost village' of West End in North Yorkshire, now submerged under the waters of Thruscross reservoir.
The village was abandoned and flooded in the mid 1960s in order to provide water for the city of Leeds.
The Flax Mill was some three or four storeys high and was once part of a thriving local industry up to the turn of the 20th century.
During the drought of 1995, the level of water in the reservoir dropped to such a level that the old pack-horse bridge and foundations of the village houses could be seen. Some pictures from 1995 and the flooding in the 1960s can be found here and here.
It is possible to walk around the whole reservoir now that the footpath has recently been completed. The old lanes leading to the village are still there, disappearing eerily into the waters. Although not much is visible today, it's history makes it a fascinating place.
