Black Forest Open Air Museum

Every country seems to have a slightly different name for this bank holiday. In Switzerland it's Pfistmontag!

I took a day trip to Germany to go to the Black Forest Open Air museum. It was quite like New Lanark in that it was an artificial farming village set up with actors to give you an idea of what life was like in the past in this region of Germany. Lots of lovely wooden houses with big thatched roofs and lots of farm animals too.

These ladies were wandering around in traditional female dress. The red pom-poms on their bonnets indicate they are unmarried. Married women wear black pom-poms. That's one way to let the village boys know you're available.

A trip to the Black Forest region wouldn't be complete without a piece of Schwarzwald kirschtorte (Black Forest Gateau). The one in the museum cafe was pretty good!
