my friend sent me a card

I was so pleased to hear from her - 'I saw this picture and thought of you, I often wonder what we would have done in those times..'.  .

I am organising a community event on Saturday about my estate in East London - looking at the context within which it was built, the women who demonstrated for decent housing in 1949; the women who took a full part in the war effort (like the woman in the card) and then who were made to go back to their traditional roles as home-maker/mother in the 1950s. Our estate won a design award in in 1951, it had all mod cons - inside toilets, hot water, gardens etc - the ideal home... And I wonder how those women coped with their suddenly-restricted lives.
