Bus Challenge No 60!!
"The Westbury or Bratton White Horse is a hill figure on the escarpment of Salisbury Plain, approximately 1.5 mi (2.4 km) east of Westbury. Located on the edge of Bratton Downs and lying just below an Iron Age hill fort, it is the oldest of several white horses carved in Wiltshire. It was restored in 1778, an action which may have obliterated a previous horse which had occupied the same slope.... The horse is 180 feet tall and 170 feet wide and is a symbol for the town of Westbury... It is also considered a symbol for Wiltshire as a whole." Wikipedia
Fuelled by a large bowl of porridge, I set off early on my first bus of the day to Bath, where I met up with a friend and took a second bus into Wiltshire and to Westbury. The weather was wonderful, not too hot and not too cold, perfect for slogging two and half miles up a very steep hill to the White Horse of Westbury!
Standing on the edge of Salisbury Plain, the views were stunning! Thanks to the clear weather, we could see for miles and overhead the Skylarks were singing sweetly...
After a picnic lunch on 'a bench with a view', we headed back down hill, following a path along the edge of the Iron Age hill fort. Arriving in Bratton, we caught a bus to Trowbridge, a fourth bus to Bath, and then for me a fifth and final bus home, where I arrived weary and sunburnt but very content after a grand day out!!
(My extra photos show some of the many and varying views of the White Horse that I had during my walk, one of which is a horse's eye view!)
