The open window
Here's one of my favourites from Hugo Williams' recent volume (as pictured, & published in 2014) ...
One Summer
Two hot days and nights,
then a thunderstorm after you've gone.
I count the miles
between the lightning flash
and the first rumblings
as the storm sets off northwards,
looking for a place to lie down.
Car alarms moan in the distance.
A curtain of rain hangs in the garden,
then blows indoors.
I run upstairs to check the window
and there it is -
the one in the bathroom still open
from when you were here.
