As late as 1981 the Evening Post, reporting on the loss of the Beeston Astoria, noted that ‘obviously the locals don’t want to preserve the bizarre 1930s building.’ This from the same newspaper which in 1936 when the Astoria was new declared ‘no more handsome cinema has yet to be seen in the Nottingham district.
