Wilts and Berks canal

We took one of the Shrivenham circular walks today. It took us along a stretch of the Wilts and Berks canal (even though it doesn't go through Berkshire at all now since the vale of the white horse now belongs to Oxfordshire).  It was very sad to see the canal in such a state of disrepair. There is an action group trying to restore the canal, but obviously not much has been done in this area. In fact at one point an overhead electricity cable pole sits right in the middle of the canal!
Aparently they aim for the canal to be complete within 20years, connecting the Kennet and Avon canal near Melksham, through Swindon, Shrivenham, Wantage and joining the River Thames at Abingdon. Although at Abingdon it will be impossible for the canal to travel it's original path, as Caldecott Road is now built over it. So they plan to cut a new canal path slightly to the south, joining the Thames between Abingdon and Drayton.
