Fruit stall Italy
Here we are in Italy! Our first real holiday for six years for one reason or another.
We first spent a holiday in Sorrento with T about 15 years ago. It is a great place for visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Capri, Amalfi, etc etc by public transport which includes ferry, bus or train. Not so good for beach holidays as there aren't any proper beaches to speak of! The area is also the centre for the growing of citrus fruits which are harvested several times a year. The trees lining the wider roads were full of oranges and we walked along a mud path through lemon groves to our hotel. One noticed in the narrow streets of the old town there were many small shops smelling of sickly sweet lemon scents, soaps, and the liqueur Limoncello.
The giant lemons in the photograph are called cedri (cedro, singular). They are apparently more like grapefruit and are used to make a syrupy drink called cedrata. They first appeared in Italy from the Middle East with the Arabs in the 10C.
