Armenian Genocide

Today is the centenary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide which started with the arrest of hundreds of Armenian intellectuals by the forces of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople.  They were sent into exile and many died.  Between then and 1923 it is estimated that 1.5 million Armenians were killed in what most historians now recognise was an act of Genocide.

We met Mirian while out for a walk.  She is 90 and was born in exile - her parents came from what is now eastern Turkey.  She told us of her family and their hard life.

The alternate photo is of one of the many stark billboards in view all over Yerevan.
