Mobile holiday home

This has been D’s dream for a long time – at last, realised.
It’s been productive long weekend, getting to know our new “holiday home”, and stocking up the galley, getting the bedding organised, and learning about how various things work. Still lots to learn, not to mention going out on her for the first time – and getting back into the berth, that could be a challenge! We have of course been out for sea trials and mechanical checks during the pre-purchase process, but there is nothing like going “solo” without the previous owner at the helm.
Having now spent a couple of nights on board we are very happy with the comfort and liveability. I had a little concern the first night, rather disturbed by the continuous crackling and popping sound, best described as being like a crackling fire or milk poured on rice bubbles! I had visions of rampant osmosis or electrolysis destroying the hull, or electrical short circuits, but Mr Google had lots of articles about snapping sounds being made by shrimp or krill – can you believe that? Well, the audio clips you can find on line sound exactly like what I heard, and snapping shrimp are indeed found in the Hauraki Gulf (Alpheus euphrosyne richarsoni). So I think I am comfortable with the thought that the hull is OK. The snapping shrimp story is quite extraordinary though, once you start researching it. Apparently the sound comes from the collapse of a cavitation induced air bubble rather than the clap of the over-sized claw closing. Fascinating stuff.

Otherwise it is so peaceful on board.
Roll on summer……
