Stokesay Castle, Craven Arms, Shropshire.
Stokesay Castle, is a fortified manor house built around 1285 by Laurence of Ludlow who was England's leading wool merchant. Laurence had purchased the land for £266 and built the manor house on it. The building was subsequently lived in by various individuals up until the end of the 17th century when it fell into disrepair. Since that time, several restoration works have taken place and in 1992, the castle came under the guardianship of English Heritage and is now both a grade I listed building and a scheduled monument. There is a very interesting article regarding the history of this splendid building on the Wikipedia website.
