Lilac Cottage

I've been living here now for well over eighteen months. In many ways I don't like it as much as the old cottage but two things give it an edge; the first is that it's pretty much in the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale, which I'm enjoying even more than I expected to, and the second is how much Dan likes it.

Part of the problem is that it's so bloody run down. The landlord seems largely uninterested in keeping the cottage in good repair, at least that's the impression I get from the letting agency: I have no contact with the man himself. So, the alarming bulge in the bedroom ceiling is unattended, as are the rickety cupboard doors in the kitchen, the various drafts and leaks, and the creaking central heating system. The last time the cottage was inspected, the agents just noted the garden gate needed attention. I wondered at the time if they'd actually been inside!

Still, hopefully I won't be here too much longer, so maybe I should just relax and enjoy it. It is as shambolic as the Weasley's house in Harry Potter and I do have a couple of red-headed daughters, so perhaps I'll just enjoy what magic this property has for the last few weeks that I'm here. Who knows, one day I might even manage to feel nostalgic about it.
