The North Carr lightship hiding in Dundee.
This was built in Glasgow in 1932 (steel above sea level and iron below) and cost £15,000. This ship has no engine and was towed into position and anchored with a 3 ton anchor. It replaced an old wooden hulled ship with an oil lamp. Now it has been replaced by a buoy powered by solar panels.
There was never a place to build a lighthouse for this area where many ships were lost at the beginning of the 19C. So it was decided to put a light ship there and the ships that used the route from Dunbar to Aberdeen all paid for it.
Image what a terrible job it would have been to bob about in the North sea for a few years!
