Hector's House

I rather enjoyed a screening of Derek Jarman's film, 'Jubilee', last night at the Contemporary (not least because it was a freebie!) I figured I was being a bit worthy but it was far less artsy/arsey and pretentious than I remembered (though still just artsy and pretentious enough) and with a bit more plot, in a culty 70's sort of way (inexplicable explosions of violence, over and/or underacting, maniacal laughter, angels, that sort of thing...) Not many punks in attendance, though - it was more of an 'art' crowd... I've decided, however, to spare the world my jubilee display from the Library (I like it, but it's just not very photogenic) as a possible 'last word' on the subject. Here's a song with possibly a pertinent lyric about a "dumb patriot" instead. I was listening to 'Searching for The Young Soul Rebels' yesterday ahead of catching up with the all-shiny-and-new 'Dexys' album today and because we were peeling veg and it's good music to cook by despite the fact that it occasionally leads to inappropriate dancing on my part which annoys Katie no end. I'm afraid there's a kind of helpless, ska-inflected twitching that it inspires in me - my excuse being that the sound of wired-up, multiple-expressoed anxiety (how's that for a middle-aged/class alternative to the actual dexys) has rarely sounded so soulful and compelling.
